Originally incorporated in 1878, Scotch Plains is a close-knit community made up of nine square miles. The village green and main street host local businesses and restaurants, including many that have been part of the community for decades. The rich history dates back centuries and some structures, like The Frazee House and The Stage House Inn, are part of the National Register of Historic Places. The town now offers a municipal golf course; several parks with plenty of recreational space; and access to the Raritan Valley train line via the Fanwood train station as well as a direct bus to New York City. Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School has consistently voted a top public high school in the state, and the town is also home to the Union County Vocational-Technical Schools, including the Academy for Information Technology, named in several top national high school lists for excellence in education.
Spend a rowdy afternoon at the Irish-style pub, Darby Road Public House and Restaurant. The food is great, the banter spectacular. Down the road is Stage House Tavern. They have a large and delicious menu that promises something for everyone. The Tavern at Ash Brook Golf Course is great for date night, with elevated comfort food and a side of the gorgeous view. John’s Meat Market is known as a top butcher in the area, for the evenings you’d like to grill in your backyard.
Scotch Plains's downtown is not as robust as Westfield or Cranford, but still has plenty to offer. During the spring and summer months, the town hosts a farmer's market, in the municipal lot with a wide variety of vendors. Scotch Plains is slated to revitalize downtown with a vibrant mix of retail, restaurants, apartments, a new combined library and town hall, convenient and efficient public parking, and public plazas along Park Avenue and surrounding streets.
