Built-in 1874 the Fanwood train station stands as the oldest original train station in Union County and, in addition to providing commuters with service to Newark Penn Station, remains the center of many of this community’s activities. Fanwood continues to expand its downtown with new shops and restaurants while maintaining its small-town charm. An interesting mix of homes, from Victorians and colonials to Capes and ranches, are maintained to Fanwood’s high building standards by its 7,300 residents. This small town with a big heart was voted New Jersey’s Best Small Town in 2019 by NJ Monthly magazine.
Fanwood is an independent borough, 1.3 square miles in size, a population of 7,300, in Union County, New Jersey. Many of the residents commute daily to New York City. Fanwood has a station on NJ Transit’s Raritan Valley commuter rail line. NJ Transit also has a full schedule of bus service from Fanwood to central and northern New Jersey and New York City. This town has also been voted Best Small Town In New Jersey.
Fanwood has a downtown district that includes many thriving businesses. Over the last five years, their downtown has enjoyed a rebirth made possible by the new construction of several multi-use buildings including commercial and residential occupants. This little downtown packs in some great restaurants, quaint shops, and a redeveloped La Grande Park.
Students in Fanwood attend the schools of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Regional School District, which serves students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade from the Township of Scotch Plains and the Borough of Fanwood.
